When in doubt….Accessorize!

When in doubt….Accessorize!

Ever take a look around your space and feel like something is missing?

Have you added necessary functional pieces (sofa, loveseat, end table, lamp) to your space but still can’t quite seem to pull it together?

Is your space lacking that extra “pizazz” to take it to the pro level?

If you answered yes, chances are you are lacking the holy grail of every designer’s favorite task in design.

ACCESSORIES!!!

Accessorizing your space is an absolute must.  It is the one task in the design process that allows you to showcase your personality.  The selection and display of accessories is what can make two rooms that are functionally designed the same, appear to be completely different.  Aside from the basic function elements that we all usually add to our space, the accessories in the design is the voice of the designer.  The selection, style and placement of decorative items is the designer’s unspoken voice for how they want you to experience the space.  It is the map and key for what mood/emotion you want guest to feel.

When selecting accessories consider two things.  Do you like minimum or max?  What is your style?

An easy way to get your creativity flowing is to find inspirational pics of designs that you absolutely love.  Spend some time studying what it is that is drawing you to the design.  Aside from the color scheme and layout, what is it about the décor that speaks to you?

Living Spaces

Living Spaces

  • Add accessories to mostly horizontal areas (bookcase, table top, mantel) then to negative space (walls, windows)
  • Include humor/convo pieces that show your personality
  • Scale wall art to size.  My suggestion “Go BIG” with large art!  One piece of large art can go a long way.
  • Display in odds 3,5,7.  Do NOT clutter with small accessories.
  • Install window treatments closest to the ceiling to lengthen your room’s appearance.
  • Vary accessory sizes in one area or grouping (i.e. pillows, trays, mirrors, photos, antiques, children art, statues, colored glass, movie posters, plants, flowers, rocks)

Happy Designing!!!

I really love this! Being on a fixed income makes it hard to do what i really would like to do. With the ideas you give makes me look at it a whole different way! Thank you!

    • Thanks Charolette! Even on a fixed budget its possible to decorate. Pace yourself and purchase items during season end sales to get the lowest pricing. It may take a few months to accumulate decor but before you know it you’ll have varies accessories to spread throughout your home.
